What are the risks of homebirth?

There is always minimal risk during childbirth no matter who provides your care or where you choose to give birth. Homebirth is statistically as safe as hospital birth if you have a low risk pregnancy and receive prenatal care. However, no one can guarantee a problem-free birth. We are trained to monitor for signs of problems and use minimal intervention when necessary or transfer to the hospital should the need arise. Our highest priorities are the safety of you and your baby. When there is a true emergency that requires immediate transfer to the hospital, there is a time delay in getting there which varies depending on where you live. We work well with the EMS team to ready you or your baby for transport. We make the necessary calls to get that process started while we are transferring to minimize the time delay.
